David Mallery, teacher, educator, seminar leader, and creative spirit, passed away on January 16, 2010, at age 86.
Below are some memories of David Mallery. You can share your own memories here.
David Mallery gradutated from Germantown Friends School and returned to teach English there from 1946 to 1959. He then became Program Director for both the Friends Council on Educaiton and the National Association of Independent Schools, organizing inspiring seminars for teachers from around the world.
Everyone became a permanent part of the David Mallery network. He was not only a dynamic leader of seminars but attracted others who shared their special gifts with the participants. Always willing to meet with potential teachers, teachers having doubts, teachers looking for fresh inspiriation, he continued his seminars independently after leaving the Friends Council. His legacy includes the many educators who benefitted directly from his inspiration and the students who benefited indirectly.
Those who were privileged to attend his seminars, see the special viewings of Lost Horizon that were always a highlight of the Westtown Seminar, meet with the authors and leaders who taught at his seminars, or receive an encouraging e-mail from David, will hear his voice for many years to come . . . recommending the latest book he had read, or movie he had seen, or giving wise counsel and encouragement when it was needed.
We are all truly grateful for having had David in our lives.
Links to some pages describing his seminars will remain open for a time so that visitors can get a picture of his legacy and his passion for teachers and for education. A memory book where those who knew him can share their thoughts will appear on this web site in the near future.
